Brief about me

I teach and research in the field of Biochemistry and specifically concentrating on Protein Science and Membrane Biochemistry. In our Labs, we do basic cell biochemistry studies looking closely at the intrinsic type of apoptosis which occurs via the modulation of the mitochondrial membrane permeability transition pore (MMPTP), a non-specific protein complex whose transition between the open and close state could mean live or death for a cell. Because of the ability of the pore to play this role of committing a cell to death or not, it has applications in the development of drugs that could treat diseases of cell proliferations such as various cancers and those useful in the treatment of diseases arising from cell depletion such as diabetes mellitus. In developing likely drugs we utilize known medicinal plants which active phytochemicals are then molecularly docked with known ligands (any of the protein components of the pore, especially cyclophylin D) to verify interactions. We also do apoptotic assays and cancer cell cytotoxic assays to confirm the mechanisms of action of discovered bioactive agents.
