Brief about me

Prof. Samson Olakunle Ojoawo completed his B.Tech degree programme in Civil Engineering from the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso in 1998, he then proceeded to the University of Ibadan where he had his M.Sc degree in Civil Engineering in 2003. He also bagged his Ph.D in Civil Engineering from the same University of Ibadan in the year 2010. In 2014, he was a 12-month Post-Doctoral Fellow at Department of Civil Engineering of the prestigious NMAM Institute of Technology Nitte, of the Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, Karnataka State, India. He was appointed at LAUTECH Civil Engineering Department as a Graduate Assistant on 28th December, 1998, and rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Civil Engineering effective from 1st October 2016. He became a Registered Engineer with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) in 2004, and also a Registered Consultant with COREN in 2013. He is a Corporate Member of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (MNSE), Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (FNICE), Member of the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (MNIEE) and an Associate Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (AMASCE). As a practicing Registered Civil Engineering Consultant with COREN, he has been involved in the engineering design, construction/supervision and monitoring of over fifty (50) public and private functional Structures within and outside Nigeria.

He has served LAUTECH in several capacities at the Departmental, Faculty and University Levels. He has successfully completed his Administrative responsibilities as an Acting Head of Civil Engineering Department (2006-2008) he is a member of the University Senate (2006 – 2008, 2019 till date) and was Postgraduate Programme Coordinator for Department of Civil Engineering (2017). He was elected unopposed as the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology for two terms (2017/2018 and 2018/2019 academic Sessions). Again, he was appointed and served as an Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology LAUTECH between April 1 and July 31, 2019. He is currently an elected University Senate Representative (also unopposed) at the Appointments and Promotion Committee (A&PC) and the appointed Chairman, University’s Projects Monitoring and Implementation Committee (2021 till date).

Prof. Ojoawo’s research activities centre on Water Resources and Environmental Engineering. Particularly, he has studied the pollution levels and remediation measures to surface water, groundwater resources and wastewater systems extensively in Nigeria and outside her shore. He has also researched into the engineering management of leachates emanating from solid waste dumpsites with the application of geosynthetic, geotextile, High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) liners and their composites. These and related research activities had led him to the development of a customized computer modeling tool for determining the optimal leachate and gas volume generated, leakage rates and breakthrough times of various landfill liners for leachate containment. During his Post-doctoral training at Department of Civil Engineering, NMAM Institute of Technology Nitte, of the Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, Karnataka State, India, some selected domestic and industrial wastewater samples were fully characterized and subjected to various successful treatments, among which are phyto-remediation with Canna x generalis and bio-remediation with Brevibacterium. sp.  Back home at present, his research in this line continues with the application of agro-wastes like neem bark, rice husk, pawpaw stalk, maize leave, and so on in the remediation of heavy metals pollution from industrial wastewater. With the assistance of the University, through the Federal Government of Nigeria’s Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) Institution Based Research Grant received in May 2016, he coordinated the establishment of a Mini-Environmental Laboratory in the Department of Civil Engineering, and this is now functional for both undergraduate and certain postgraduate research activities. Activated carbon is being produced from the agro-waste precursors under guided laboratory conditions and activating agents/modifications, these are being applied for effective remediation of industrial wastewater. In collaboration with colleagues at the Microbiology Department, the potentials of Bacillus Safensis, a gram-positive bacterium is also being successfully explored in the remediation process.

As of last count, he has authored (and co-authored) over eighty (80) publications in form of articles in learned journals, conference proceedings, monographs, chapters in books and books. Since his appointment into the University System about 25 years ago, he has successfully supervised over 200 Bachelor’s degree and Postgraduate Diploma final year projects, and had completed 7 Masters and Ph.Ds research theses supervision, while 5 others are on-going. He has equally presented some of the outputs from his research works at over 30 International Conferences attended in Nigeria, India, and the United States of America. Some of these are also published in learned International journals.

In contributing to human capital development and upbringing of the younger ones, he has been actively involved in the teaching of core Civil Engineering and related Engineering courses both at home and abroad. At various times and up till date, he has served as an External Examiner to many Universities and polytechnics for Civil and Environmental Engineering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes nationwide. He has equally served as External Assessor for Professorial Promotions for many of the Universities in the Country. He is a Reviewer of some International Journals and the Deputy Editor in Chief, LAUTECH Journal of Civil and Environmental Studies (LAUJOCES), an International Journal resident in the Civil Engineering Department, LAUTECH.

Prof. Ojoawo has won some awards both academic and professional. He had his Post-Doctoral Fellowship through Indian’s Technical Education Quality Improvement, TEQIP-II Scholarship Award in 2014; Best Paper Award, International Journal of Civil Engineering, International Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology (IASET), IASET Global Research Forum, U.S.A, and he also won TETFUND-IBR 2015 Grant, Federal Government of Nigeria, by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund Abuja, Institution Based Research Grant, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Nigeria in 2016.
